Since 2010 Respect has been handing out awards to Care Givers in the Community and it’s our pleasure to again seek to promote the great work the staff at RDASH do.

Congratulations to the whole team at St Johns Hospice from Respect

  

St John’s Hospice WINNERS 

In fact they are that special one family were so impressed they nominated the whole team for a Respect Group Carers Award and sure enough the team at St John’s Hospice are the WINNERS 

We often only become aware of the fantastic support, care and attention that’s available through St Johns when either our last weeks, days and hours come or indeed that of a family member or friend 

We nominate; All the staff at St. John's Hospice on Western Road, Balby, Doncaster on behalf of our family in the way they looked after our father Mr Frank Harrison.  He was such an active man even at 72 he was a well known delivery man around Balby for a busy local Chinese takeaway, before this he ran f a well known Auction house on Carr Hill for 10 years and prior to this ran a fish & chip shop in South Common Thorne for more than 20 years. 

His daughters Ilona & Mona did not hesitate to fund raise and nominate St Johns because “after finding out my Dad had less than 2 weeks left we requested that he be moved to St. John's. The care he received there was second to none, even when he was a little short and snappy to the staff they were fantastic, they took the time to talk and explain things to both my family and my Dad, sometimes more than once if I didn't quite understand. 

They made us feel like we were the only people that mattered in the whole world while we were there, checking on us and my Dad regularly, even giving us hugs when we were finding it difficult, nothing was to much trouble.

The doctor was there regularly also to make sure my Dad was in as little pain as possible. 

It is just an amazing place, although the staff have their own family at home they made every effort to make us feel like one big family and would love for them to receive some recognition for the effort, time and patience they put into everyone in there”

Alison Finch and Gordon Tulley of Respect Green Burial Parks who laid Mr Frank Harrison to rest and whilst arranging the direct funeral heard how grateful and whole-heartedly thankful the daughters were to St Johns. Respect Carers Awards have been running for 6 years and asked if they could nominate the Hospice and because we have had to help several families who have passed through St Johns hospice we thought why not as these teams often carry out a task that very few of the families have the presence of mind at the time of losing a loved one to show and express their thanks to the hospice staff, 

We know it takes a good number of staff to care for each individual during end of life care and we too as funeral directors see and respect the fantastic, often very difficult job these unsung heroes of the nursing profession undertake to ease the stress and worry on both the person in their care and especially on the whole family

From Thorne

The team led by the owner operator Penny Bennett of Bennfield House in Thorne are, according to more than one family the well deserved winners of Respect Carers Award indeed they are the first care home in Thorne to have ever won this award

Why?  Because one former resident Mrs Dawson whose daughter wrote in the following nomination after Mrs Dawson passed away and was laid to rest at Respect Green Burial Park  where the care home staff attended at Respect Bawtry

Jeannette stated 'Mums care in Benfield was above and beyond’.

I couldn't possibly single anyone out in particular but without Penny “Matrons" hard work and example Bennfield wouldn't be what it is. It's like one big family that's only way I can describe it. I never had to worry about Mums care she settled in from first day and everyone always made such a fuss of her which she loved. Throughout Mums illness we were always given support too and made very welcome at the home. Nothing was too much trouble we could even stay and eat with Mum if we liked. 

I can't thank them enough and I thank each and everyone of you especially the Nurses and Julie in Mums final days….

Bennfield House was established 34 years ago by Penny Bennett a former Ward Sister who started Doncaster's first EMI specialist care home in Thorne and now has a team of 64 staff to look after every need of their 27 special residents.  They even have a resident who was the first employee at the care home back in 1984 which speaks volumes for the trust both her and her family place in the team  “We look after the complex needs of the elderly EMI residents right through to all their end of life care”

"We always have one of the highest occupancy rates in the Doncaster region" explained Penny "and we are thoroughly delighted for our team to be recognised by the family of a loved one who we took into our special extended family here in Benfield”.

 Emma keeps the home active, often throwing themed events in which the clients really enjoy.

Food and activities are definitely a highlight of the home, everything done to high standards!  

I recently worked alongside Emma during a few activity events and found the tireless work Marjara care group do actually opened my eyes to the world of care .. It's emotional but they do such a good job . I couldn't believe how much they do to meet their personal needs.. The lunch clubs, coffee afternoons touch the hearts of the community and especially the residents too

The idea is for the patients, residents and those being cared for at home to vote for the most dedicated carer in their area.

Open to the whole of the care industry, from cook to cleaner, volunteer to trained carers and of course professional careers and managers.

This is a Win Win program to be run each year with winners every four months culminating in an award in December and an annual award giving ceremony at the National Coalition Palliative Care workers NCPC Dying Matters Annual Event in May with prize giving by the Mayor / The High Sherriff, with regional PR in the press, Radio & even perhaps TV to give recognition to them for being a special person.

The aim is to promote recognition of the team for everyone to see, for every visitor to their place of work from family members to prospective residents, patients and their families when they visit.

Imagine the respect and self-esteem this will promote throughout the team.  

We supply Award Certificates, take photographs and supply the frames for display in your reception, all free of charge to you.

Respect Green Burial Parks are fully sponsoring and organising the whole system from promoting, collating nominee forms, photographs and producing the Award Certificates and photograph frames

This is at zero cost to you and all we need is someone to collect the nominee forms.

The main aim is to promote the NCPC Dying Matter Palliative Care Campaign.

War Hero Honours Carer

As a war veteran whose heroic story is inspirational to thousands, he is more used to receiving awards that presenting them.  Yesterday however, Ben Parkinson, the most seriously wounded man to survive the conflict in Afghanistan, presented a Respect Carers Award in South Yorkshire to a ward sister at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.  Joanne Wilkinson was nominated for her hard work, dedication and talent and was presented with the award by the paratrooper who was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours. Sister Wilkinson was also given the prize of being collected by helicopter for a ride over the town.  The Respect Carers Award is given to honour care workers for their role in the community.  The ceremony took place at the town’s historic Mansion House.

HOSPITAL nurse Joanne Wilkinson was on a high after winning an award for her work at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

As well as being presented with a Respect Carers Award by the Green Burial Park at Bawtry, Sister Wilkinson also enjoyed a flight over Doncaster in a helicopter as part of the prize plus lunch at The Earl of Doncaster.

The certificate was presented at Doncaster’s Mansion House by someone else who commands respect, Ben Parkinson.

The soldier - the most severely wounded to have survived the war in Afghanistan, after losing both legs in a land mine explosion in 2006 - was awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours list for his military charity work.

Sister Wilkinson was nominated for her hard work, dedication and talent. The award is given to honour care workers for their roles in the community.

Caring Nurse Wins Top Award

A kind hearted nurse has been rewarded for her efforts with a prestigious regional award.

Joanne Wilkinson, a ward sister at Doncaster Royal Infirmary was presented with the Respect Carers Award by Ben Parkinson MBE.

The poignant presentation was Ben Parkinson’s first opportunity to hand out an award to carers who he knows only too well deserve recognition for their hard work.

Mike Pinkerton, Chief Executive of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said “I am delighted that Sister Wilkinson’s work has been recognised by the Respect Carers Award.  She is an exceptional member of staff who cares passionately about her patients and will do whatever it takes to meet their needs and exceed expectations”
